Kimberlite Tumbled Stone Kimberlite, named after the town of Kimberley in South Africa where it was first discovered, is the stone that Diamond miners love to see ! This is because nearly 80% of the worlds Diamonds are mined from the rock Kimberlite. It forms way below the Earths surface at about 150 Kilometres below in fact - and this is at a much greater depth than any other volcanic rock. The temperature and pressure found at such depths are so high that carbon can crystallize in the form of diamonds. Kimberlite rises to the surface by volcanic action through long narrow "chimneys" that miners call "Kimberlite Pipes" and it is these pipes that contain the Diamonds created deep within the Earth. This is the reason why Kimberlite pipes are to be found at the centre of most of the world's diamond mines. As well as Diamonds, Kimberlite can also contain Chrome Diopside, Olivine, Garnet, Phlogopite, Enstatite and other trace minerals too. These pieces are from South Africa where, In 1866, the first significant amount of Diamonds were discovered. A few years later the "Star of South Africa", an amazing Diamond, was discovered and in 1869 a huge single Diamond was found, prompting an almost immediate Diamond rush to South Africa and the digging of the worlds largest hand dug Diamond mine called "The Big Hole", which was in production from 1869 to 1915.
