Peanut Wood Polished Pebble No2
Peanut Wood Polished Pebble you will receive this exact pebble This is Peanut Wood from Australia. Actually, it's excellent quality, A Grade Peanut Wood, one of the rarer types of Petrified Wood. And what a journey it's been on to get to you today ! Between 66 and 140 Million years ago conifer trees were growing in what, today, is Western Australia. As branches broke off and trees fell down, both smaller and larger pieces of wood were washed into rivers and carried out to sea. The sea at this time was shallow, salty and covered much of modern day Australia. Having arrived in this shallow ocean, the wood became waterlogged and sunk. Living in this sea at the time were some prehistoric clams whose young larvae just loved to eat wood. They would attach themselves to it and bore into it, eating the wood as they went. A few species still exist in our oceans today and for hundreds and hundreds of years sailors have cursed them for eating wooden ships, docks, piers jetties, in fact any wood that man ever put into the sea has been, and still is, a source of food for these creatures ! Because their shells are elongated, sailors have long since called them Shipworms, eating their ships in the same way as a worm burrows into an apple. Incidentally, that's why navies around the world in the 16th and 17th centuries started covering the hulls of their ships with Copper. Back to our wood with hundreds of holes now bored through it. Also living in this ancient sea were billions, if not trillions, of microscopic plankton like creatures called Radiolarians. Radiolarians had a minute shell that was rich in Silica, or Quartz to you and me, and as they died they would sink to the bottom of the sea and over millions of years, fill in the holes bored by the Shipworms. This Silica rich filling eventually, atom by atom, turned the wood into Petrified Wood. The now Petrified Wood, having been Lithified, i.e. turned into rock, had other rocks deposited on top of it and when eventually the sea levels around Australia dropped and the rocks containing our wood were heaved up by geological forces to create the Kennedy Mountain Range in Western Australia, about 120 Million years ago, our Peanut Wood was just waiting to be discovered. Once it was found, pieces showed the typical dark brown background with creamy coloured Quartz patterns. These whiteish dots were thought to look like the shape of peanuts, hence the name ! Once polished, the rock displays a gorgeous shiny brown background with matt creamy white Quartz dots, exactly like this piece. Millions of years in the making !
