Petoskey Stone Tumbled Stone
Petoskey Stone is a limestone rock formation containing fossilised coral. When in its natural state, straight from the ground, Petoskey Stone looks like ordinary limestone. It is only when it is wet or when it is polished that the distinctive mottled pattern of the six-sided coral fossils can be seen clearly.
Petoskey Stone is only found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the USA. About 350 Million years ago a shallow sea covered much of modern day Michigan and a coral reef formed there. As the sea receded the coral died and became fossilised. Later, during the ice age, large ice sheets covered the land and ground the fossilised coral along in their wake, smoothing their rough edges and turning them into pebbles that can be found there today.
The word Petoskey has an unclear derivation. Some say it comes from Chief Petosgay or Pet-o-Sega of an Ottawa Native American Indian tribe and who founded the town of Petoskey in Northern Michigan, where the stones are found. Others say that it is as close as English speakers could get to the Native American Indian word Bidasiga meaning Rays of the Living Sun or Rays of the Dawning Sun.
