Rare Glendonite No2
Rare Glendonite Glendonites are a rare form of Calcite known as a Psuedomorph. They come into existence as a result of another mineral called Ikaite having formed first. The Ikaite then becomes covered in Calcite which takes on the shape of the original Ikaite crystal. Now, Ikaite can only exist in very cold temperatures (less than 5 degrees Centigrade) and when the temperature warms up (as a result of earthquakes, seismic shift, volcanic activity or climate change etc) the Ikaite "melts" into a watery solution which, over time recrystalises inside the Calcite "coating". The Calcite hardens and takes on the shape of the original mineral, hence the word Psuedomorph, literally, "fake shape". These unusual spiky minerals were first discovered near the town of Glendon, in NSW Australia, hence the name, Glendonite. They are sometimes found elsewhere too and this particular one come from the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Lots of interesting "spikes" and a good colour too. Size approx. 37mm x 30mm x 29mm
