Scottish Iona Celtic Green Marble Pendant
This is an unusual pendant featuring a simply set stone of Scottish Iona Celtic Green Marble that has been cut into a smooth, rounded oval, shape and then mounted in sterling silver that is stamped with 925 on the reverse.
This type of Scottish Celtic Green Marble is found in the Highlands of Scotland and a few of the Islands off the West Coast, namely Iona, Skye and Tiree. It is estimated to have been formed 2,700 Million years ago.
It is found in varying shades of greenish yellow or lime green and white with occasionally a brownish banding. It is green is because this marble is rich in Serpentine.
In the past, Iona was where the most plentiful supply was to be found and a quarry was set up in the South West of the island in the late 1700's to extract the Marble. It didn't last long however as the Marble proved hard to extract and trying to get ships close enough to the treacherous rocky shore to transport the Marble proved almost impossible.
Another attempt was made in the 1800's but transporting the Marble defeated them once again.
A final attempt was made in 1907 and once again ships could not navigate close enough to the cliffs to load the Marble and it closed for the last time in 1918.
Pieces today are either sourced from the cliff faces of the old mine workings or are dived for undersea.
This will never be available in commercial quantities.
In medieval times crofters and fishermen both used to carry this Green Marble for protection against fire and against shipwreck.
