Tantalite

Tantalite is the main source of the metal Tantalum, which is both very hard and very rare.

It is sought after for its many practical applications in industry. It has a melting point of 3,000 degrees Celsius and its heat resistance and its natural resistance to corrosion make it desirable to the automotive industry and the aerospace industry.

Its use in developing more efficient satellite and rocket technology is sure to see the worldwide demand for Tantalum increase in the future.

Despite the ever growing demand for Tantalum, very little Tantalite is actually mined. It also remains that the metal Tantalum is very difficult to extract from the ore Tantalite.

These pieces come from Brazil which mines about 30% of the worlds Tantalite, 2nd only after The Democratic Republic of the Congo which now supplies around 43% of the worlds Tantalite. Other countries with large Tantalite mining operations include Rwanda, China, Nigeria and Canada. Australia used to be the worlds number one supplier but stopped mining in 2018 for various reasons. Australia however, does have in the ground, half of all the worlds estimated reserves of Tantalite !

These are irregular shaped pieces with some matrix of perhaps, ironstone or sandstone, still present.
