Barite occurs in many forms and with many differing crystal structures. It can be found in almost every country worldwide.
Possible crystal shapes include Fibrous (like string or moss), Nodular (round balls), Bladed (individual blades making up a cluster), Prismatic (elongated crystals), Massive (having no discernible shape) and Tabular (flattened) which is what this piece is.
It was discovered in The Xiefang Mine in Ruijin County, Ganzhou, Jiangxi, in the South East of China.
Barite from this mine is often found on White Quartz matrix but this piece has been removed from the matrix and cleaned up.
This Large Tabular Crystal is a wonderful gold/brown colour and on a few of the sides, the surface has an amazing sheen. It glistens and feels very smooth indeed !
Barite is quite dense, which means that it is often surprisingly heavy for its size. This Large Crystal weighs in at 570 grams, that's well over half a Kilo !
