Noreena Jasper is found in only one single location on Earth, the East Pilbara region of Western Australia. It was found near the Noreena Downs Station ranch, and this being the only habitation for hundreds of miles either way, it was named Noreena Jasper.
It comes from rocks that are over 2,700 Million year old !!
Although called Noreena Jasper, technically this stone is a type of fine-grained, and very hard, Pelite, which is a clay rich sediment or clay stone, or mudstone, a type of sedimentary rock. The Iron deposits dissolved in this clay give Noreena Jasper its much prized colours of reddish-brown, golden yellow and soft pastel grey.
These colours often blend with each other in swirls, bands, and intricate web like patterns of overlaying colours. This whole mix and blend of Earth tone colours perhaps reminds us of ancient landscapes, or perhaps rivers running through landscapes viewed from above, or even of abstract artistic creations !
