Natural Scolecite Crystals in a Basalt Vug
you will receive this exact piece Here we have an attractive spray of Scolecite crystals that have formed in a Basalt vug. A Vug is a small to medium sized crack, opening, cavity or hollow that naturally occurs as parts of the rock split away or erode. Such vugs are often then filled with secondary minerals, and that is exactly what we have here. Long, thin, needle like crystals of Scolecite have formed in a vug of Basalt. The Scolecite has been carefully removed from the rock with some of the surrounding Basalt and the Basalt has then been gently smoothed over somewhat, making it easier to handle. The Scolecite is, however, untouched and still looks exactly like it would have done when it first formed around 60 to 65 Million years ago ! This piece is from Maharashtra State in West-Central India. From the Deccan Traps, one of the largest volcanic features on Earth. An excellent example of Natural Scolecite - just beautiful !
