Natural "Maria Glass" Selenite
Maria Glass Selenite
This is a great piece of something quite unusual !
What you are looking at is an exceptionally clear formation of Selenite, laid down in thin sheets (a Lamellar formation to give it its technical name) where the sheets have been made clear by the action of sand and clay running across them and polishing them up.
All this occurred completely naturally. This piece has not been cut or polished at all - despite the fact that it really looks like a fish !
Such clear Selenite has been known about for centuries and indeed the church of Santa Sabina in Rome, built in 422AD, has this type of Selenite in its windows.
It got its name "Maria Glass" Selenite though in the Renaissance period in Europe when very thin clear sheets were used to frame and cover images of the Virgin Mary. For this reason it is also sometimes known as Maidens Ice or Lady's Ice or Lady's Glass.
It has all the crystal healing properties of Selenite - and will no doubt make an excellent talking point too !
Rare and unusual.
