Labradorite Buddha
Labradorite Buddha This is a gorgeous carving ! Cut from a really super piece of Labradorite, this carving shows flashes of blue, gold and green. As always with Labradorite, if you look at it straight on it looks a shiny grey. But tilt it just a millimetre or so and all those gorgeous colour flashes bring the piece to life ! It is indeed a gorgeous stone for artist carvers to work with. The Buddha depicted in this particular carving may show some Nepalese influence as indicated by his Ushnisa, the round, flame-like, oval or conical bump on his head. Nepalese influence often shows a rounded conical Ushnisa. The Ushnisa itself is said to represent a type of crown and shows the supreme power of the Buddha's enlightenment. The pose shown in this carving, i.e. with the Buddhas left hand in his lap, palm uppermost, and with his right hand held up at chest height with the palm facing outward is known as The Abhaya Gesture. This is one of the many Mudras, or hand gestures, depicted on Buddhist statues and The Abhaya Gesture is said to be the last gesture of the Buddha as he took his final meditation under the Bodhi tree where he attained enlightenment. This gesture is said to be the Mudra of blessing and protection offering those who come to the statue, protection, inner peace and security. This is a super carving with real significance.
