Carpet Rock No1
Carpet Rock
We just had to buy this when we saw it - we do like to bring you something different from time to time !
This is a piece of "Carpet Rock" from Morocco. Essentially it's Sandstone with lots of Iron rich minerals in it, Siderite, Pyrite, Hematite etc. and these interesting shapes occur when the Iron oxidises.
At some point way back in geological time, water filled the holes in the rock between the Sandstone and the Iron rich minerals. This caused the Iron to go into solution. As the rock weathered and became exposed to the air, Oxygen in the air became available causing the iron to oxidise and leach out of the rock.
As it leached out it created these bands and box shapes of different colours. Scientifically, such banding is known as Liesegang Banding.
Because of the pattern it often creates, such pieces of rock are known locally as Carpet Rock !
