Faden Quartz

Faden is a German word meaning thread, and these crystals are characterized by the white, threadlike lines running through them.

Many are also tabular, or "tabby", crystals - i.e. they are flat to look at and have 2 sides that are much wider than the other 4. Tabby crystals often have notches on their sides.

Faden Quartz crystals are created when Quartz initially forms in a small cleavage between two existing rock faces. To start with this Quartz deposit is attached to both the rocks on its left and on its right. Over an extremely long period of time, the two rocks will begin to separate and pull apart.

This very slow stretching of the Quartz crystals means that they ever so gradually pull apart at the centre. However, the Quartz will "self heal" and re-crystallise the broken bonds in its centre. This happens over and over again until a string or thread of white can be seen down the centre of the crystal where it has continually re-healed itself.

A secondary layer of Quartz then grows on top of this initial "Quartz thread" and crystallizes over it, trapping the thread inside the Quartz.

The delicate and brittle nature of these crystals makes each one all the more precious.

Physical

Faden Quartz is thought of as a strong healing crystal, helping wherever actual disconnection is involved, e.g. broken bones, torn ligaments, torn muscles or any time there is a separating of parts.
