Fenster Elestial Quartz
This wonderful small Quartz Point is known as a Fenster Elestial Quartz. So what does that mean ?
Fenster is a German word that means "Window", and Quartz such as these pieces often display windows where you can "see into" the Quartz or areas that are "window like" where you can see the internal structure of the Quartz.
They are often formed due to incomplete crystallisation of the Quartz. You could think of it as the necessary solution needed to form the Quartz in the first place, running out or thinning out and there not being enough solution left to properly form a complete Quartz crystal. This is why you can sometimes "see into" such crystals.
This incomplete crystallisation also results in these pieces being known as Skeletal Quartz.
Because Silicon Dioxide in solution wants to form Quartz crystals, given the right opportunity, it will try it's hardest to do so and maybe just small tiny, tiny little points on top of the main point are all it can do when the solution starts to run out. These tiny little points on top of a main body of Quartz are called Elestials.
Now for the purists among you, we know that not every single Fenster Quartz is an Elestial - nor is every single Elestial a Fenster Quartz, but they are often termed as Fenster Elestial Quartz as the conditions that are necessary for them to form are common to both.
You do get larger pieces of course, but because of the way they are formed (running out of "Quartz solution") the vast majority of such pieces are small.
This is a lovely piece with a great shape.
