Herkimer Diamond Cluster
Herkimer Diamond Cluster Gorgeous genuine Herkimer Diamond cluster, mined in and around the town of Herkimer in upstate New York. This is a cluster of 7 Herkimers plus a tiny baby one ! If you have never seen Herkimer clusters before, please note that these are NOT stuck together, they grew like this naturally ! Two things to note about Herkimers are that the clearer they are, i.e. the more see through, then the more astronomically expensive they become. The second thing is that golden ones are much sought after. This particular one has one crystal that is extremely clear, one that is quite clear and even the biggest crystal shows only very minimal black carbon inclusions here and there. Actually it was thought for a long time that the black inclusions were a mineral called Anthraxolite (nothing to do with the disease Anthrax, just an unfortunate naming coincidence! ) but nowadays the black inclusions are more usually referred to as Hydro Carbon inclusions. This particular cluster also has one or two crystals that are Golden in colour, or have a golden inclusion. We say one or two as it's quite hard to determine if one crystal is golden and it's simply reflected in the other crystal or if two crystals are golden ! The reason for the golden inclusions are still argued over. One camp says it is Iron Oxide which gives Golden Herkimers their colour, i.e. the same as Golden Healer Quartz, whilst the other side argues that it is inclusions of petroleum that provide the golden colour. They back this up with the fact that the black dots are Hydro Carbon inclusions and Hydro Carbons are the building blocks of petroleum ! Either way, it looks gorgeous ! We decided to photograph this superb piece against a black background to show off the golden colour against the Quartz. However, you can see from the other photo that the whole piece is Quartz like in its clarity. Remember too, that this is the real thing. A Herkimer Diamond from the town of Herkimer in New York State. It is not "Herkimer Type" from Pakistan or Afghanistan. This is the genuine article. All in all, a fabulous Herkimer Cluster that any crystal worker would be pleased to own. Size approx. 51mm x 45mm x 30mm
