If you're looking for a spectacular stone, Chrysanthemum Stone has got to be right up there ! The black stone is comprised of Calcite and Dolomite with small amounts of Andalusite and Feldspar often also present. The white or creamy white "flower" is Celestite. True Chrysanthemum Stones are only found around the city of Yonghe in Liuyang County in Hunan Province, South-Eastern China. More than 90% of Chrysanthemum Stones come from there, as does this piece. There are other occurrences in Guangxi Province to the South of Hunan, but they have a different composition. Small deposits also exist in Japan and, more recently, a few stones were found in the Eel River in Northern California but Hunan Province is still very much the main supplier. How these were formed is still a matter for debate, but, very briefly, the most popular theory is that the Dolomite and Calcite were laid down millions of years ago. The molten Celestite must have run over them at some time and perhaps pooled in indents in the rocks. Before the Celestite could crystallise, it too was covered by yet more Dolomite and Calcite, but not completely. There must have been a tiny gap left above the Celestite and some air trapped with it as well. As the Celestite tried to crystallise over time, it was squashed more and more by the weight of additional rocks forming on top of the Dolomite and Calcite. The only places it had left to expand was radially, sending out wafer thin "petals" of Celestite into microscopic gaps and cracks in the Dolomite and Calcite. For this reason, do not wash this piece as the white Celestite flower in extremely thin ! This piece is gorgeous, a really high quality piece of quite a rare stone.
