Novaculite This is a large tumble stone of Novaculite. It has been shaped and polished before being lightly tumbled to give it a smooth feel all over. Although also found as small deposits in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Japan, nearly all the Novaculite known on Earth comes from The Ouachita Mountains of Central Arkansas and South Eastern Oklahoma with smaller deposits from The Marathon Uplift, a geological feature in West Texas. Novaculite is a dense, hard, fine-grained siliceous rock (i.e. mostly made from Silica) that forms from sediments deposited in the seas and oceans where organisms such as diatoms (single-celled algae that secrete a hard shell composed of silicon dioxide, or Quartz to you and me) are abundant in the water. When the diatoms die, all these billions or trillions of tiny little shells fall to the ocean floor and form a sediment covering the sea bed. During a natural process known as diagenesis, (the changing of one mineral into another by natural chemical action, pressure and heat) this silicon dioxide rich sediment is gradually transformed into Chalcedony. At this point the resulting Chalcedony rich rock is known as Chert. As further diagenesis takes place over millions of years, the Chalcedony present in the Chert is metamorphized into microcrystalline Quartz grains. At this point, the resulting rock becomes Novaculite and the microcrystalline Quartz grains are responsible for its smooth feel ! Mostly known for its excellent cord cutting abilities, the colour range of Novaculite includes cream, tan, brown, light grey and dark grey. This lovely piece has only been lightly polished so that it retains most of the natural shape, feel and characteristic of the stone. An unusual stone and although we have sold this before, it is becoming harder to obtain. Size approx. 36mm x 34mm x 16mm
