Shangaan Amethyst No9

Shangaan Amethyst is the trade name for a Smoky Amethyst mined by the Shangaan tribal people who gave specific agreement for mining to take place on their homelands. It is currently mined at the Chibuku Mine on the Gezani Communal Land near the Mateke Hills in Southern Zimbabwe at a location about 60 miles North of the Limpopo River and close to the border with Mozambique.

The whole area is apparently pristine clean with crystal clear waters and an abundance of fish. The land is fertile and well managed. Chief Gezani wants Shangaan Amethyst to be known world-wide and hopes this will bring a raised global awareness of the Communal Lands in Zimbabwe. However, he laid down 2 restrictions before any mining was allowed. 1) If a tree needed to be cut, 5 more must be planted and 2) If any hole is dug, it must be filled in again. A lot of the miners are Shangaan women and all the mining is done by hand, making Shangaan Amethyst very ethically mined indeed.

Shangaan Amethyst was first discovered in 2019 and so is a relatively new find. It is only in the last 6 to 12 months that pieces have appeared on the commercial market in any quantity.

To look at, Shangaan Amethyst is similar to Brandberg Amethyst from Namibia - over 1,000 miles away to West. Both show Amethyst with Smokey Quartz and Clear Quartz in varying proportions. Shangaan Amethyst does have more Hematite inclusions though. However, what really separates them is that Shangaan Amethyst readily forms as Skeletal crystals, Window or Fenster crystals, Elestial formations and as Sceptres. A relatively high percentage are also Enhydros, i.e., they have bubbles of water trapped within them.

Clearly, not every crystal shows ALL of these formations (!) but it is unusual that so many crystals display these characteristics.

Also, like Brandbergs, they tend not to be "pretty" crystals and are frequently found with rougher or less smooth patches and lots of surface marks. They are, however, powerful crystals.

Not much has been written yet about the properties of these amazing crystals but preliminary thoughts from noted crystal experts all say they contain an incredibly strong feminine energy that develops self-confidence and personal power leading to personal transformation.
