Blue Opal Tumbled Stones
These tumble stones are absolutely wonderful examples of Blue Opal !
They originated from the Andes Mountains in Peru and because of where they come from, stones like this are also called Blue Andean Opal or Peruvian Blue Opal.
They have a really strong blue/green colour - and of all the Blue Opal mined and then tumbled or polished, probably only the top 10% has this depth of colour. We hand picked about a dozen pieces or so from a tray of about 500 pieces. They rest we left behind as they were very pale blue.
As always with any sort of Opal, there are patches of the matrix present that the Opal formed in. Opal forms in solution with water and with Silica. As the water runs down through the rocks it picks up Silica from sand and flows into voids, gaps in rocks, holes between pebbles etc etc. The water then evaporates and leaves behind the Opalized Silica. This process cannot be completed in anything less than 5 million years.
Cutting away all the matrix is virtually impossible as you would end up with your Opal getting smaller and smaller !
These stones have not been coloured, treated or dyed. They are 100% completely natural - well apart from them being tumbled and polished to make them smooth to the touch !
